The Fireplace Description:
New American cuisine in an upscale atmosphere, centered around a fireplace. There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant (enter off of Washington St.).
Brookline's preppier couples make The Fireplace their home away from home for all its upscale warmth. Logs burn in a stone chimney facing the bar; an exhibition kitchen lines the slightly elevated, understated dining room. And the menu mirrors the space by emphasizing comfort on the one hand and New England tradition on the other. Indeed, it evokes the bounty of Thanksgiving, year-round. Roast meats meet their match in baked beans and johnnycakes, brown bread and savory puddings, all touched with maple, molasses, cranberry and the like. Lunch, meanwhile, hews to two-handed traditions like sloppy Joes and tuna melt---which nonetheless exhibit upscale oomph. Granted, the kitchen is seemingly marked by a revolving door, and execution varies as a result. Still, we're inclined to keep rooting for a neighborhood place as mellow and well-meaning as this one---even the kids' menu shows thoughtful touches. Drop by for the "fireplace chats" every other Saturday, with seasonal wine, beer and cocktail tastings, highlighted by talks from local brewers and vintners.
