Matt Murphy's Pub Description:
This traditional Irish pub is, somewhat untraditionally, known for its food, serving sandwiches, such as spiced beef, as well as entrees, including roast chicken, and the traditional fish and chips. While Murphy's is a neighborhood hangout for local residents and town employees, it also attracts a following from other parts of Boston, especially among the local Irish population. The room is long, narrow, small, and dark, and there are only a few tables -- if it's crowded, which it often is, you may be asked if you're willing to share a table. Bring cash, as credit cards are not accepted; if you forget, there are several nearby ATM's. Also be aware that although the bar is open late, the kitchen closes much earlier.
At this Irish pub, lined with a stand-up bar, you'd expect the Guinness to be good. And it is---as are the Murphy's, Tremont Ale, Anchor Steam and other beers on draft. What you won't believe, however, are the huge portions of decent to downright good food. Fish 'n' chips arrive wrapped in newspaper and butchers' paper, along with a ramekin of homemade catsup that more closely resembles tomato chutney. The potted whitefish is better than the mousses you'd find at much higher-end destinations. Shepherd's pie is full of lamb chunks and plenty of root vegetables. And the unbelievable brown bread, baked in-house daily, comes with huge triangles of sweet butter. What's the catch, you ask? Used to be the massive cramping avid crowds both caused and endured in the tiny space; post-renovations, however, grass-is-always-greener nostalgia for the cozier atmo of old can take root.
