We never expected after moving to Maple Ridge to find a "Five Star" style chef in residence at one of the local restaurants. The new young chef paired with new manager (formerly of The Bedford House) have revamped the old Lava Room and now have a winner. We went here for our 20th Anniversary and the entire experience was romantic, from the lovely soft jazz
music playing in the background, to the attentive, personalized service, but best of all the food, oh the food was utterly delicious and presented so beautifully. Each course was a new taste sensation. Yet the price was below what we expected. Excellent value. We have told everyone we know about the "New" Lava Room. We will be back. Definitely.

From the greeting at the door, to the fabulous presentation of the food, it was just Great! I had the special - Crab Salad, it came out like a tower, layered with spicy sausage, tomatoes & avacado's. My friend had the Ribs, which were finger licking good. The drinks were great, the atmosphere was fun & the staff were outstanding.

I've been there several times, with kids, with friends, just with my husband. The food is consistently good. The staff is very friendly & knowledgable. It is always a relaxing meal, not rushed. The fact that they care about their ingredients and server local products (from beer to meat to dessert) means alot to me. I hope people get out to enjoy it, we need more restaurants like this.

We were really happy to see a steakhouse in MR, that served Hopcott meats, so my husband an i went there for supper. I loved the atmosphere, though felt they neeed some plants on teh patio to hide the window view of the muffler shop accross the street, and the big whiteboard sign in the parking lot.
THe service was lacking, but it could just have been our waitress, as the other tables seemed ok.
It took a while to take our drink order, and they don't have a house cocktail menu, which is surprising. but that was ok, i ordered a simple manhatten. When it didn't arrive the waitress came and told me that the bartender didn't know how to make a manhatten so was looking it up.
We noticed that some tables had bread baskets, but we were never brought any.
We then ordered appies, a salad, and our main and side dishes, and a half litre of wine. The waitress then asked us if we wanted our wine right away, and we had to tell her -no, we will have our cocktails with our appetizer, but the wine should come just before the main course. She said "ok, remind me". (which we had to).
The appies were delicious, but after waiting over half an hour to get them, we hadn't even finished eating them when she showed up with our salads, and put them on the table, so we each grabbed a last mouthful of the appies and then asked her to take the plates away. as she was just going to put the salads down with the other dirty dishes on this small table for 2. My appie was served with chopsticks (seared tuna) and she didn't pick up the chopsticks or wrapper i had to give them to her on the next time walking by.
We then had our salads, and had to remind the server to please bring our wine "oh yeah" she said. The wine eventually came, and we had finished with our salads, but we both kept our forks, because we had a feeling that this server wouldnt' clue in that she should bring fresh cutlery between courses.
She brought the wine to our table and didn't pour it, just put it down and walked away. My husband and i were laughing at this point, we realized were now paying fine dining prices, with Denny's style service. We poured our own wine and she didnt' even notice.
When our meals came, the food was really good. I had to ask for some horseradish, and instead of bringing a small condiment bowl, she came back with horseradish on a spoon and put it on my plate.
When we were done, she didn't offer us a desert menu or coffee, just asked if we wanted our bill, we said we would take a desert menu and then finaly she took our order and we decided to share a creme brulee. That took over a half hour to arrive and the server came back and asked if we wanted more wine (didn't offer coffee) and we said "just our desert please" she looked suprised and said "Oh yeah, for some reason the desert chef didn't get your order, so he is just making it up now".
the desert was very good, but then the bill took almost 20 minutes to arrive.
we were there for over 3.5 hours and even for a leisurely meal, that was extremely slow.
our server only had 3 tables.
I will go back, asi enjoyed the food, and would like to see a local business like this succeed. However for a traditional steak house with the pricing they are offering, they really need to get the service down pat.

All the ingredients were present to make Lava Room a successful restaurant in Maple Ridge. They have a decent menu, efficient and easy going service and sports in the bar that isn't the same old same old that you usually find in these types of places.
Unfortunately that is where it ends. When we actually sampled the fare, the food lacked freshness and real appeal (other than how it sounded on the menu). It wasn't all bad, it just could have been better...
Will we go back... yes, since the selections in maple ridge are not that vast. We will give it one more chance, as they are still less than 1 year old and working the bugs out of their system...
I hope they succeed.
