La Verdad Description:
A taqueria in the shadow of Fenway Park, owned by celebrity chef Ken Oringer of Clio. The menu is fairly simple, with tacos, burritos, and tortas.
They offer counter service for takeout and a small counter area, and there is a much larger full-service area with regular tables, including outdoor seating. They offer a wide selection of tequilas, in addition to Mexican sodas and other beverages.
The nearest subway stops are the MBTA Green Line Kenmore and Fenway stations.
To enter La Verdad is to forgo every last shred of skepticism about Ken Oringer's Midas touch. From New French fare to sashimi to tapas, he's conquered every cuisine he's attempted---and comida mexicana is no exception. Granted, context is key: the moody cantina---crimson-walled, lined with tequilas and dotted with Day of the Dead figurines---is all of a half-block from Fenway Park, with a built-in fan base (which it shares with the Sox, of course). But it's got the content to pack 'em in off-season too. Though we wish the tacos were still offered à la carte, sampling a variety remains possible via platters; especially delish are the varieties dripping in marinades, like the tangy pork adobo or the shrimp in governor sauce---a red-orange tomato-shallot sofrito as bright on the tongue as it is to the eye. (Grilled meat fillings can be on the drier side.) Do start with the guacamole; made with avocados, lime juice and nothing else, it's as fresh and pure as can be, while the accompanying tortilla chips---hot, thick, and sprinkled with cojita cheese---will be a revelation to junk-food junkies. Tortas, meanwhile, are the much-improved Manwiches of the twenty-first century.
