Mooo Description:
A steak house in the XV Beacon Hotel, in the former location of The Federalist. The restaurant is part of chef Jamie Mammano's Commonwealth Restaurant Group.
Where most luxury steakhouses can seem like noisy clubhouses for aging former frat boys in suits, Mooo.... is pretty, romantic, understated and elegant. Situated in the XV Beacon, its tastefully modern, beige-palette décor makes the cattle-themed touches (antique grooming brushes on the walls) forgivable. The à la carte menu is centered on huge cuts of Prime steak, much of it dry-aged (a costly process that produces beautifully concentrated beef flavors), some of it with platinum pedigrees. The $50 dry-aged sirloin, from Oregon's Painted Hills ranch, ably demonstrates the superiority of boutique Prime beef over the commodity product served at most places. If you're willing to shell out, $120 gets you six ounces of decadently tender Wagyu sirloin, not the American knockoff of Kobe more commonly seen. Seafood lovers get better-than-average treatment for a steakhouse, especially where the raw bar and appetizers are concerned. Gourmands can always get the three-pound lobster, a $100 brute that will turn heads. Sides and desserts are likewise huge but less impressive. Prices are breathtaking, especially if you order off the stunning list of trophy wines. Service is uncommonly attentive, aimed at the sort of plutocrats who are used to being pampered. The capacious bar is a fine spot for quiet, well-made cocktails.
