Teatro Description:
Contemporary Italian fare overlooking the Boston Common. Part of chef Jamie Mammano's Commonwealth Restaurant Group.
Teatro marks a rare attempt by Jamie Mammano---also of chichi Mistral and Sorellina---at downscaling. He doesn't exactly succeed, which is just as well, at least when it comes to the dining experience. The Theater District space, formerly housing a synagogue, is as dramatic as the name warrants. A chic, if eerie, blue light bathes the dining room, playing up the gold leaf on the vaulted ceiling, and the voices of the Bellini-sipping, Eurocentric crowd ricochet off the marble. Meanwhile, there's much to appreciate on the relatively simple, seasonal Italian menu. The beautifully presented antipasto platter for two is always a hit, as is the muscular rigatoni bolognese; a less common gem is the unctuous lamb meatball dish, served with pappardelle. Seasonal specials like garganelli with prosciutto, pears and Parmesan cream are deceptively smooth. With prices in the high teens and twenties, it remains costlier than its cuisine type (as opposed to its rent) warrants, but it's a bargain compared to its siblings. A "piattini" (small plates) menu is also a good value. Note: Anthony Susi, late of the beloved Sage restaurant, is now behind the stove.
