Tasca Description:
A mural of some twinklingly lit Mediterranean village greets you as you walk into the intimate foyer and bar area; in the dining room, burning candles surround you. And for the most part, the food lives up to the romantic promise of the décor. The team of Irishmen---that's right, Irishmen---who run the place worked for years on the Spanish Riviera (hence, the wall art). The menu, which changes just enough to keep regulars interested, offers a handful of platos principales as well as tapas, but we rarely get past the latter. Try the thick slices of toasted bread with manchego, anchovy and tomato called bocaditos; croquetas; and the asado de cerdo, tender roast pork over white beans. When we do make it to main courses, we find the vivid flavors of the zarzuela, a fish stew served with crostini for dunking, memorable and certainly preferable to the so-so paella. Finish it off with the pastel Basque---an odd but addictive, crunchy-creamy concoction of toffee, bananas and whipped cream atop a cookie crust. The wine list is Iberian-focused, of course, and on Thursday nights, when the flamenco guitarist casts his spell, the transformation---make that transportation---from Brighton to, say, Valencia is complete. (Speaking of transportation, valet parking in a neighborhood where spaces are sparse is a real treat.) In short, Tasca is an old favorite for good reason, but even if you doubt our reasoning, you'll agree the prices are reasonable.
