Tangierino Description:
Tangierino brings the sultry stuff of Morocco to Charlestown. Inlaid stone tables, rich fabrics, cushions and canopies hint at the grandeur of Marrakesh's palace restaurants, yet it's all on a neighborly scale. The kitchen employs the sweet medieval spice palette of Moroccan cuisine while relying on sound French technique to deliver dishes at once exotic and recognizable, classifying each as either "authentic" or "contemporary." Among the former, b'stilla---a layered torte made with delicate phyllo pastry, almonds and (in this case) chicken---warrants a try, as do lamb offerings, while the couscous is hearty if a little moist. Among the latter, tuna gets special treatment---the signature tartare appetizer is a carefully textured cylinder of tropical flavors like mango and avocado---although pistachio-crusted scallops with two fruit glazes are a bit belabored. The wine list is heavier on Californian selections than you might expect. After dinner, head to the moody Koullshi Lounge downstairs; here, you can get around the smoking ban by puffing on fruit tobacco through hookahs, even while sipping on Moorish-inspired cocktails and forking into the dessert menu. On Monday nights, you'll even get a tarot reading. The food might not be stunning, but the atmosphere sure is.
