Saigon Hut Description:
In a neighborhood that's long been a haven for immigrants, Saigon Hut delivers standard Vietnamese fare in a simple setting. On a busy street where taquerias, an espresso bar and some large Italian restaurants create a buzz, this no-frills room with pink walls and framed prints is the only Vietnamese restaurant on the East Side of the tunnel. The menu may be typically Vietnamese, but the dishes themselves, like the Vietnamese shrimp salad (goi tom), fresh rolls (goi cuon) and various rice vermicelli bowls (bun) boast clean, often tangy flavors, plenty of herbs and fancifully cut vegetables. The Vietnamese-style drip coffee is made with the chicory-laced French Market brand from New Orleans, which, when poured over a base of sweetened condensed milk, turns into a fine cup. Poured over ice, it's even better. A good alternative to pizza on the other side of the tunnel.
