Mamma Maria Description:
New England style meets new Italian cuisine in this lovingly restored townhouse on a genuine cobblestone street a few doors down from Paul Revere's abode. The elegant setting, composed of an intricate warren of individually themed dining rooms, inspires the staff to pamper you (without fawning) throughout your well-paced meal. As you'd expect, your fellow diners consist mainly of comfortable-in-their-skin suburbanites and businesspeople engaged in subdued conversation, rather than the gawking tourists and googly-eyed couples who frequent the more boisterous North End trattorias. Of course, you pay extra for your mini-vacation, but the food is generally well worth it. Making excellent use of local, seasonal ingredients, from foraged mushrooms to sweet corn, the kitchen also has a way with seafood like diver-harvested scallops and, of course, lobster. Handmade pasta, meanwhile, is a given as well as a treat; don't miss the sumptuous oxtail ravioli, prepared cacciatore-style with wild boar. To clinch the deal: in a neighborhood not known for either, reservations and valet parking are both doable here.
