La Sultana Bakery Description:
Maverick Square in East Boston has waterfront property, views of the cityscape, and a thriving Latin American cultural scene...not to mention a swelling population of artists who’ve fled the high rents across the water. Yet Eastie, as it is known, is little visited. That’s a shame, especially when it comes to food. La Sultana, a Volkswagen-sized bakery on the far corner of Maverick Square, is revolving-door busy with local artists, factory workers, families, even chefs on break. Its Latin American treats include rich coffee, circular and huge chicken empanadas, half-moon-shaped beef empanadas, churros, and many sweet, doughy breads, nut cookies, and takeaway lunches heavy on ribs, rice and fried chicken. Dirt-cheap prices and transporting tastes make this quick bite worth the trip. We make it as much as possible.
