Though you wouldn't know it from its always hopping late-night bar scene, Bricco has had its share of ups and downs over the years. Under original chef Bill Bradley, and then under the mega-talent Marisa Iocco, this sleek, dark spot was a first-rate, if steep, place for a foodie to be. But between the two was a long dry spell, and we fear Iocco's departure is triggering another. After all, audacious culinary instinct like hers is tough to duplicate. Granted, the kitchen gives it its all, aiming for the unexpected by stuffing ravioli with both roast chicken and sausage or spiking a Caesar with fried ricotta balls. The execution isn't always smooth, however; butternut squash mashed with foie gras, for instance, sounds lush but turns out disappointingly muddy.
