Bravo Description:
A contemporary, eclectic restaurant, located on the second floor of the Museum of Fine Arts.
Parking in the museum lots is free for restaurant patrons after 5:30p.m. However, lunch patrons must pay if they park in the museum lots.
As an alternative to its frenzied, family-filled all-day cafés, any major urban museum is likely to house a quieter, eminently civilized eatery these days as well; Bravo fits the mold for the Museum of Fine Arts. Warm-toned and warmly lit, the Peter Niemitz-designed space boasts a rotating collection of contemporary works from the galleries; that fact alone makes it worth visiting for a cocktail during its rather limited evening hours. But the equally modern menu has its moments as well. Indeed, we actually prefer dinner to lunch; in the light of day, appetizers in the teens and entrées in the mid-twenties seem rather unnecessary when the salads and sandwiches served downstairs in The Galleria suffice. But by night they're par for the New American course; and if delicacies like rare tuna brightened and sweetened by blood orange, fennel and pistachios, or stouter-hearted selections such as seared hake with chorizo and butter beans, don't radically distinguish themselves from their counterparts at any semi-upscale spot, they're generally executed very well, often with a tad more artistry in presentation. In short, just as your average MFA excursion is an escape from the dreary same-old, a meal in its dining room is automatically special even when the food is merely good.
