Haru Description:
In a block of Huntington Avenue below the Prudential Center packed with restaurants, Haru offers a slice of something different. Walk in and a wooden footbridge and bamboo floors bespeak serenity, while funky lighting and accents of scarlet indicate the contemporary culinary experience that awaits. This is neither the best nor the cheapest Japanese joint in Boston---not even within a few blocks' radius. But here and there Haru shows some flair. Rock shrimp tempura with chili aïoli and the quasi-shellfish casserole called Mad Crab (more commonly known as Dynamite) are both addictive. We're also impressed by the range of nigiri options---with two types of clam and two of roe, all stripes of tuna, and live as well as raw scallop, Haru's batting better than average on the variety front. Still, the special rolls just aren't that special---especially given the price; when we're shelling out well over ten clams per, we expect pristine piscine works of art rather than unwieldy odes to trendiness (read: charred this and gold-flecked that). In the springtime months, look for cocktail specials, including the kicky Cherry Blossom (a mix of Svedka Cherry, Nigori saké, peach purée and cranberry).
