Estragon Description:
Located in an airy, lace-curtained Art Deco space, Julio de Haro's taperia offers an interesting, mostly Spanish wine list and an array of sophisticated tapas. Traditional nibbles like roasted and salted pimientos, complimentary marinated olives and crusty bread with tarragon-scented EVOO make worthy starters. Accompany any of them with a glass of fino sherry and you'll only up the ante. A sangría that adds little more to vino tinto than fresh citrus juices is dispensed from an outlandishly mammoth antique beverage fountain. The many fine small plates include meaty, fresh tasting sardines, roasted eggplant with pignoli and chorizo, and assortments of Spanish cheeses and charcuterie (with topnotch jamón serrano). A few non-traditional specialties stand out, like the foie gras and sea urchin slider. The spacious bar area includes some lounge-style seating plus plenty of standing room for folks who prefer to stroll about cocktail party-style while they drink with one hand and nibble with the other. Service is usually relaxed and enthusiastic---but sometimes verges on scatter-brained. The adjoining epicurean boutique, Las Ventas, is a good place to stock up on authentic Spanish meats, cheeses and other gourmet groceries.
