Rio Grande Café Description:
This popular Tex-Mex restaurant was a favorite of George Bush when he was president. (Look for the chair painted red, white and blue in his honor).
The menu is mostly Tex-Mex favorites (burritos, enchiladas and the like) but also includes seafood dishes and quail. There is a fairly large bar area where you can wait for your table. Given the popularity and the fact that they don't accept reservations you will always wait on weekend evenings.
A crowd-pleaser, the Rio Grande delights with its lusty fare and lively ambience, yet it's one of the few local places where high decibel levels really do not distract. At its Bethesda location, crowds are stacked up and pleased to hang around for the chips-and-dip combo before the rounds of enchiladas, tacos, sizzling fajitas, chiles rellenos and even broiled quail that emerge with baskets of freshly baked tortillas from the kitchen. We recommend the luncheon El Dorado soft tacos and at night select a tortilla soup, carne asada main course and the outstanding chocolate flan for dessert. Also located at 1827 Library St., Reston, Va., 703-904-0703; and 4301 N. Fairfax Dr., Arlington, Va., 703-528-3131.
