Pan Asian with a bunch of interesting twists. Some of the food could be considered authentic while other choices are more asian inspired than asian.
When Mark Miller opened the first Raku restaurant in Dupont Circle some years ago, some people must have wondered why he was forsaking his Southwestern successes for Oriental adventures. With this second Raku and a different Asian menu that provides only Thai and Japanese cooking (with one Korean exception), it’s fair to say that the menu has taken a turn for the better---this restaurant provides an improved take on the Asian kitchen. Mind you, it’s all very interpretive, for a traditional Thai would probably never use Japanese noodles in a curry dish. And which Asian cuisine would include polenta or ratatouille with an entrée meat? But overlooking these creations, we’d have to say that Raku makes a pleasant luncheon stop, particularly for customers lusting for big bowls of noodle soup. Try the tempura shrimp and vegetables in the Tokyo Dashi bowl for a filling midday break. And if you long for sushi or sashimi, there’s plenty here to satisfy those cravings, too. Heftier entrées include grilled salmon teriyaki or miso-marinated Chilean sea bass, and a special Bento box, the contents of which vary daily. Want a good stiff drink?
