Holy Land Description:
Quality here is inconsistent, but on days when the whole-wheat pita is light and fluffy, the chickpeas are moist, and the tahini is plentiful, the falafel is the dish to target. Most patrons show up at the small, basic dining room for the falafel and shwarma pita pockets, which come with a side of delightful spicy herb hot sauce, and no-frills service from the family that owns the place. Other good menu offerings are the combination salad featuring seven different Middle Eastern salads and that breaded and fried Israeli classic, chicken schnitzel. A range of Middle Eastern breads and pastries such as cheese-stuffed burekas and fluffy Yemenite mallawah flatbread are at once comforting and exotic, while a glass of homemade mint lemonade is fine refreshment after a walk on sunny, bustling College Avenue. It's difficult to save room, but sticky-sweet baklava is the classic ending to a Holy Land meal. Those who keep kosher should be aware that although the sister restaurant in Oakland is glat kosher, this location is only "kosher style."
