Adagia Description:
Cozy historic Berkeley building, with authentic California cuisine, that uses locally grown and organic ingredients whenever possible. Has an all-California beer and wine list as well.
University of California students have another great place to take visiting parents, who will undoubtedly be charmed by the adorable residential architecture and well-tended front garden, and the spacious dining hall's British décor of a century ago. Hefty wood tables and chairs cower beneath dark panels that soar upward to the 25-foot ceiling, made darker by spindly, haunted house chandeliers. A cool night is the perfect time to stop in---not just for the warming faux fireplace, but also for the dense, amply portioned meals, including a Caesar salad of grilled romaine and radicchio, topped with wide strips of salty Parmesan, egg, white anchovy and a memorable, restrained wash of creamy aïoli. Sample succulent dayboat scallops with fava beans just touched with lemon, butter and wine, or embark upon the enormous fork-tender braised lamb shank paired with cumin, served with a sweet polenta spoon bread and a piquant orange relish. The wine list is one of the most esoteric on the campus block.
