Hard times for restaurants? You'd never know it to look at Mekong Delta Café, with its kitchen and dining room bustling day and night, weekday and weekend. This is a simple, pleasant family-owned Vietnamese eatery, offering what might be some of the best pho in town. Generous bowls of this addictive savory soup---the best imaginable meal for a dreary winter day---are stocked with plentiful rice noodles and a choice of meats, including beef flank, meatballs and grilled chicken, and then garnished by the diner with fresh bean sprouts, basil, cilantro, lime and jalapeños. It's a meal in itself, but you're likely to be tempted to add a pretty rice-paper roll, served with peanut sauce for dipping, or one of the stir-fries that fills the room with the irresistible fragrance of garlic and spice. Mekong Delta doesn't take credit cards, but you might not need them: nothing on the menu costs more than $9, and lunch specials are much less. No alcohol is served, but you can BYO.
