Matthew's Pizzaria Description:
Years before pizza became a nationwide sensation, Baltimore had Matthew's. Founded in 1943 in blue-collar Highlandtown, it was where generations of Baltimoreans tasted their first pizza, and it has remained a favorite ever since. The opening of the Creative Alliance across the street brought the pizzeria a younger group of devotees, willing to wait in line to sit in the old-fashioned dining room, painted with murals of the Italian countryside. The pizza itself is somewhat controversial---the fluffy, high-rimmed crust sags under heavy toppings, and isn't the best bet for carry-out---but for many, this is simply what pizza ought to be. Huge salads, spaghetti with homemade sausage, and bountiful subs round out the menu.
