Asti Trattoria Description:
This charming little taste of Italy offers sophistication in a funky Hyde Park neighborhood, and does so without breaking the bank. Creative fare from the seasonally changing menu is ferried by a friendly staff that is always helpful---yet sometimes hovering---with good menu and wine recommendations. We like to start with the antipasti platter, which is an ideal sampler of the simple food of the Italian provinces: cold calamari salad, house-made breadsticks, white bean purée with truffle oil, and sliced Italian cured meats. Grilled and roasted meats, like the duck breast or chicken paillard, are nicely prepared, as are the generous pasta selections. We usually grab a quick lunch of pizza---try the roasted pear with baked prosciutto and goat cheese. When it comes to seafood, one of our favorite entrées is the moist salmon filet brightened with a fresh tarragon cream sauce. Desserts are elegant. The trattoria boasts cool swivel stools at the shiny stainless-topped bar, a good place to watch the open-kitchen chefs perform their culinary tricks.
