Longtime chef Joe Ahn keeps a firm hand on SoHo's definite tilt to Asian flavors, although occasional Southwestern touches remain from the restaurant's early days; this is evident with the chicken tortilla soup. Ahn's signature calamari stands out with its ginger-and-soy glaze counterbalanced by Serrano pepper, along with its tempura crispness. Blackened grouper picks up a Cajun reference, while the hanger steak keeps a touch of the Southwest and Asia in the sauces. Classic Southern touches come in the form of such dishes as buttermilk fried quail with greens, creamed corn and a red-eye gravy. It's an appetizer but makes a fine small entrée, with tender quail fried to a crisp and delightful greens. Elk is a popular game standard at SoHo. Warm chocolate bread pudding is a delightful conclusion. The ample, well-priced (most selections under $40 a bottle) and well-chosen wine list offers most not only by the glass, but also by the three-ounce pour, making SoHo an ideal spot for browsing a variety of wines.
