Shoya Japanese Restaurant Description:
The izakaya, or Japanese pub, purveying small plates and lots of them, plus specialized drinks has come to Atlanta. Small plates can cost as little as $4, for a grilled eggplant appetizer, for instance, or as much as $33 for a deluxe sushi platter that's obviously designed for sharing. In between lie a wide range of little dishes, including kushiyaki---skewered and grilled offerings---and such morsels as monkfish liver and shirako (fish milt), poached and served chilled. It's possible to adhere to vegetarian requirements at Shoya and still dine nicely. The cooking and the preparations have not bent to American tastes, except for the dessert offerings. Japanese jell-o anyone? The wine list has nothing of interest to offer, so stick with either the specialty drinks or beer. There are chilled sakés, of course, but the small bottles are 300 ml., a bit much for a solo diner but a deal for a couple. In fact, this is a good spot for a group of friends to explore various fine sakés---but then that's the idea behind the izakaya.
