Still nourishing the neighborhood and tuned-in patrons from far away locations, Violette remains the best memorial to its founder, Guy Luck, a native of Alsace, France. His longtime companion, Stephanie Belcher, keeps his spirit alive at the unassuming structure that Luck built with his own hands. Stefan Picarda turns out such dishes as classic duck à l'orange and coq au vin, at prices considerably lower than those you'll find in many upscale spots. At dinner, you'll enjoy your meal to the tune of a grand piano with a pianist doing the classics. Good values at lunch include veal meatloaf, a moist, well-flavored slice served with fresh vegetables; lamb sausage; savory filled crêpes and boeuf bourguignon, along with lighter fare. Salads are huge and satisfying, enough for a main dish. Quiche, pork rillettes, steak with any of three sauce treatments, roast lamb, and roast pork loin with cabbage in cool weather and a house-made terrine with cornichons and shaved red onions reign as signature dishes. For dessert, sample a wicked dense chocolate mousse. In the bistro tradition, the mostly French and American wine list offers lots of good values (many under $30) with an occasional deluxe selection.
