Sun Dial Restaurant, Bar & View Description:
Dining that depends heavily for its success on visual drama often disappoints when the food arrives. But at the top of the Westin in downtown Atlanta, one may enjoy a striking view of the city's skyline as the dining floor slowly moves 360 degrees as well as good food and wine. Executive chef Christian Messier has risen to the challenge of transforming the frankly boring steakhouse menu into something that wouldn't frighten away the core constituency while perhaps attracting locals who have happily left it to the conventioneers to enjoy. Chef Messier's menu is not cast in concrete, but instead rotates through the seasons as his dining space does through the Atlanta skies. Bacon and horseradish salmon is served with baby spinach and herb roasted marble potato, while smoked tomato barbecue beef short rib comes with goat cheese grits. Desserts may include a blackberry napoleon or the Sun Dial New York-style cheesecake. The wine list continues to improve, and if some of the offerings seem a bit ordinary, at least a large number of them now go with the dishes.
