OK Café Description:
OK Café's neon sign at the front door transmits how many minutes the wait time is for a table. For breakfast and Sunday brunch, there are whole-wheat pancakes made with date sugar, huge omelets and biscuits. Lunch offers big burgers made with beef that's grown free-range and is hormone-free. Salads and blue-plate specials round out the menu. Among the hefty dinners are chicken potpie and country-fried steak with such side dishes as three-cheese macaroni and the totally non-traditional corn-syrup-sweetened collard greens. (Why add these needless calories?) Thankfully, pepper sauce on the table balances this nonsense. The mac is on the dry side, but the steak, which is deep-fried rather than skillet-fried as is the fried chicken, comes out crisp and tender. We like it with the white gravy. Desserts also are hefty, and could easily serve more than one person; we recommend the banana bread pudding. Good vegetarian dishes are an option. Beer and wine choices couldn't be more pedestrian.
