Las Palmeras Description:
Felipe Alvarez and his wife, Maida, left Cuba in 1972 and eventually opened Las Palmeras in this residential neighborhood. From the first glance at the interior of this authentic Cuban restaurant, your imagination tells you where you should be. Photographs of El Morro, the castle fortress that guards Havana Bay; framed historic postcards; and a 40s-era poster of a leggy, buxom young chica showing off her glam gams that lie beneath the ruffles of a traditional outfit lend atmospheric touches. The menu is pure Cuban home cooking: the best yucca of your life is topped with a lemon-onion mojito. It's a good companion to the very traditional boliche, a chorizo-stuffed rolled eye of beef. Other traditional dishes include pisto manchego, a dish of eggs, veggies and ham; ropa vieja, well-cooked skirt steak; picadillo; and a classic Spanish egg-and-potato omelet---all indicators we're likely to have hit the real thing. Best quaff with all this is Hatuey, a Cuban beer brewed in Puerto Rico. Among desserts, the classic flan sells out fast, but the mango cream pie will certainly do until the next batch is ready.
