Fat Matt's Rib Shack Description:
Fat Matt's is a classic barbecue joint, scruffy and rough around the edges. The walls are plastered with the black-and-white photographs of blues musicians who play here every night, plus iconic photos of the notables in their prime, such as a really young B. B. King. There's no cover charge, but get your seat early and stay there; if you jump up for too long, it'll be taken. Food is inconsistent, although the most consistent item seems to be the pork sandwich, and it's a thick pile of sweet meat with the house tomato-vinegar sauce already mixed in. Very satisfying. Barbecued chicken also usually hits high marks. Side dishes of note include coleslaw and average beans. The Brunswick stew is a hit-or-miss proposition, and so are the ribs, which can be very good and tender or way off the mark, fatty and unappealing. You can get beer, but no wine or other alcohol. All the inconsistency doesn't bother the locals, however, who run a line out the door the minute it opens.
