Django Description:
The inspiration for this intimate, beautifully-lit and artfully-crafted space is Gypsy jazz musician Django Reinhardt. The décor and menu are designed to reflect the melding of seemingly disparate cultures: Asia, Latin America, North Africa and the European Mediterranean. Painted coconuts dot a plaster wall. Rough-hewn bread troughs are fitted with found industrial objects, and rest easily on highly textured old brick walls. The menu skips lightly like a stone on water across various tastes and cuisines. The sweet and fresh-tasting crispy rock shrimp could have come from a good seafood house on the coast of Georgia. Only the accompanying drizzle of saffron aïoli suggests another world's influence. Lying across a sweet roasted acorn squash slice, braised lamb shank falls off the bone and melds perfectly with the shiitake mushrooms that accompany it. Tarte Tatin shows up not with its traditional apple topping but with mangoes, and a mango sorbet and coconut cream ice cream. The wine list isn't overreaching, but it offers enough good choices, with most by the glass, to keep things from becoming boring.
