Spoon Description:
Spoon is an authentic Thai cafe and bar located in Westside/West Midtown. A simple menu offering a flexible choice of curries, noodles, fish, and specials (most with vegetarian options). Spoon pulls in the local office crowd for lunch and more ecletic sophisticated urban crowd for dining. Expect authentic Thai cuisine complimented with down-tempo music, a friendly staff all set in a loft-styled 70+ open seating space. Prices range from $7-11 for lunch and $10-18 a plate for dinner.
The hip, somewhat industrial décor lacks the merest hint of typical Asian aesthetic. It creates a comfort zone for Techsters and other denizens of this part of town, many of whom pioneered loft living in Atlanta. Spoon's Thai dishes run from the inventive to the norm, but what seems standard for Thai food here has the zing of fresh ingredients and the deftness of artful presentation. Basil rolls, for instance, are lively in flavor and presented cut into bite-size portions. Innovation rules in such dishes as the corn-crusted tofu cakes, so good vegetarians will want them as center-of-plate fare. Massaman curry may be ordered, as usual, with a choice of beef, chicken or shrimp. But the tamarind-accented flavors don't depend solely on heat for their impact, although that's certainly present and may be adjusted according to taste. Green curry is also well done. Jasmine rice flecked with black sesame seeds accompanies all. Lovely tea is available as a beverage. A wine list that reflects some thinking about what should be paired with Thai food is short, but very useful. An Eastside location is found at 749 Moreland Ave. SE, 404-624-4713.
