Cuban Bistro Description:
Opened by an alum of Versailles, this stylish spot forsakes the coffee shop décor that characterizes most Cuban restaurants in L.A. The restaurant's contemporary good looks include a blue and yellow palette, worn brick walls with faux antique sconces, and table linen. Accent drapes are emblazoned with the Cuban flag and an entire wall is covered with a mural-map of the island accompanied by flattering quotes from Christopher Columbus. Starters include ham croquetas, plantains stuffed with shrimp, a solid black bean soup, and crunchy yuca fries. Among recommended entrées are the hearty ropa vieja, garlicky chicken, oxtails and a very satisfying pargo frito (whole fried red snapper in garlic sauce). More sophisticated Nuevo Cubano dishes are offered as specials, such as a horizontally-sliced filet mignon layered with a purée of plantains and onions, with a port wine reduction. House-made desserts, such as flan and rice pudding, are first-rate.
