Gold Street Caffe Description:
When it opened some years back, Gold Street Caffè was promptly thronged as the glittering new kid on the downtown block, set in a historic garage that had been renovated into a stylish North Beach-style hangout. But the neighborhood---and the city---have evolved a lot since then, and Gold Street hasn't. A now fairly typical café, it emphasizes upscale sandwiches, salads and snacks that either put south-of-the-border spins on their American foundations or vice versa---be it quesadillas filled with Gorgonzola and green apples, fajita French dips, or chipotle-laced potato salad. Results are hit or miss for the price; breakfast and brunch are more consistent, as chile-glazed bacon, green chile brioche and, yes, green chile biscuits add spice to the likes of sirloin hash and ham-egg-mascarpone sandwiches. House-made syrups make coffee drinks a must as well.
